  1. Imperialism was not beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa. Africans tended to have a negative view on British rule, because they felt that they were being taken advantage of. They had limited say in what went on, and were being used for the natural resources in there country. Both document two and three show that the Africans were forced into work; on the mines in south Africa and on trains in the British colonies. The Europeans were organizing these activities for the Africans to do because they needed the raw materials and natural resources that were underground. These were tough jobs, in which they worked long hours for very little pay. The Europeans imperialized for selfish purposes, not to benefit anybody other then themselves. In document five, Jules Ferry stated that economically, France needed colonies that contain markets so people can buy there goods. The idea of Social Darwinism is also mentioned in this document, and the theory that people best suited to survive, will. Document six talks about the Berlin Conference and how it negatively affected Africa. This conference re-mapped Africa, and France, Germany, Great Britain and Portugal dominated and established new borders. Otto von Bismarck called for this conference because there was confusion among colonialist nations regarding borders, however, this conference wreaked havoc on Africa by dividing cultures and bringing together enemies. The only country not involved in the Berlin Conference, was Africa, which made it unfair to them. Document eleven discusses the "white mans burden" and the horrible things the "white man" has forced upon Africans. The Black Mans burden was created to show how unfairly the white's were being treated under the White Mans Burden. Not only were the forced to work incredible hours, but were treated harshly.

  2. There were many reasons why imperialism was beneficial and not beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa. One reason that it was beneficial is in document number four you can see that the British built Africans a decently nice Hospital. This is beneficial because now the Africans have a lot more of sanitation and medicine then they have ever had before. As you can see in document number seven another reason why imperialism was beneficial to Africa was in Nigeria when the British built roads and railways. This help the people of Nigeria because now they have much better transportation then they did beforehand. On the other hand, Imperialism was also harmful to the people of Africa in many ways also. One example is that the British forced a lot of Africans to work in mines in South Africa for long hours. (document number two) Another example of how imperialism was harmful to the people of Africa was in part vII document II, in that document the author explains how the white man have forced horrible things upon Africans. Some of those horrible things could be slavery, making the Africans do long hours of difficult work. Another harmful thing that the British did to Africa was in document number three you can see that the British made new railroads. Even though the railroads were good for transportation, they made the African slaves work even harder because now since the trade was moving faster they needed more things to trade, therefore making the Africans work longer and harder. In part three document number six you can see another example of how the British was harmful to Africa, this document talks about the Berlin Conference. The Berlin Conference was harmful to Africa because it was all of the European countries talking about which parts of Africa they were going to take over without Africa's approval, showing that Africa had no say. Overall, it is obvious and proven in the documents that Imperialism was more harmful then beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa.

  3. Imperialism was both beneficial and non-beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa. Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries. France, Germany, Great Britain and Portugal were some of the large European powers trying to be imperial over these other countries. In document 6, it states that a conference, called by Otto von Bismark, took place. This conference is know as the Berlin Conference. During this conference, Otto talked about the confusion among all the European powers regarding the boarders of Africa. Africa had no say in what happened to their own country and the indigenous people were forced to abide by the Europeans rules. This act was not very beneficial to the Africans because they had no say and couldn't do much about it. In document 2, the indigenous people of Africa were being forced to work in small, dark and dangerous mines for little or no pay. They worked long hours not to benefit themselves but, the European powers. This was a negative effect towards the African people. The European powers were trying to industrialize them but, completely disregarding the people, for their own gain. Also in document number 3, Africans were being forced to work and again the effect was negative. There also were positive effects. In document number four, a positive effect was shown. The European powers that were trying to industrialize Africa helped them. They helped them by setting up a health care facility. This truly benefited the indigenous people of Africa. Before this, there weren't any hospitals or places to go when people got hurt or sick and now there was. European powers tried to degrade people into doing their work for them. They completely ripped apart their land and lives all to benefit themselves, with no concern for the native peoples. They were non-beneficial in many ways to the African peoples but at the same time helped them. They gave them a hospital to go to when they were the ones that caused most of the injuries.

    1. I agree with the stance that imperialism had both positive and negative effects on the indigenous people that were conquered as a result of this ideology and drive from Europeans to expand well beyond their borders. Ally brought up a good example in the Berlin Conference, as this exemplifies one of the most prominent negative features of imperialism. The Berlin Conference divided up Africa, not giving the natives any say. And after the natives of the continent were overpowered by the Europeans, they were forced to work for these new foreigners in harsh conditions. However, as Ally goes on to explain, the Europeans brought not only hardships to Africa, but modern technology and advances like hospitals that would positively impact the people. Therefore, based on Ally's stance and evidence, I agree that imperialism had a dual-sided nature that both helped and hurt the native populations of Africa.

  4. Imperialism has positive and negative effects to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. Though the intentions of the Europeans were good, the effects were mostly harmful to the indigenous people. When the Europeans came to Africa, India, and South-East Asia, they forcefully modernized the country. The indigenous people were given hospitals, schools, railroads, etc. In the long run, these may have been important developments, but the Europeans acted without any regard to what the indigenous people wanted. In document one, Dadabhai Naoroji says “I mention that you should know our feelings. Our great misfortune is that you do not know our wants. When you will know our real wishes, I have not the least doubt that you would do justice.” During the Berlin Conference, the European powers divided Africa because of conflict and confusion among colonist nations regarding borders. According to document six, the European nations did not consult with Africa before dividing it and creating new borders. This caused conflict in Africa because the borders divided cultures or brought together enemy tribes. Documents two and three show the cruel labor the indigenous people were forced to do. The Europeans forced the native people to work in mines and railroads. On many occasions, Europeans forced the indigenous people to collect raw materials for them to bring back to their countries. According to document eight, the Germans imposed taxes and made the Africans grow cash crops or work on new settlers’ plantations. Unfortunately, the native people who were taken over by Europeans were essentially treated as slaves. They were treated cruelly and were looked down upon because of racism.

  5. I agree with (Rob) that imperialism was beneficial for the indigenous people of Africa, India and South-East Asia, yet it also had a series of negative impacts on them due to the sudden domination and their lack of control on their own areas. The positives and negatives were both realized by an Indigenous person effected by British Imperialism. According to document one, the indigenous people of Africa felt British rule stabalized their nation, yet increased poverty for their people. Other positives included the increase of natural resources, which was a significant part of an economic and postive change(doc 2&3). Hospitals were also built for the people of Africa(doc 4). This was important towards their health care, because on the negative side, they were enslaved and forced to work in the mines/building trains for their natural resources(doc3&4). The arbitrary boundaries arose problems for Africa, because after the Berlin Conference, Europe colonized Africa to their liking, without African approval. This led to dividing cultures and the bringing together of enemies (doc 6). While this may have been very harsh to Africa, a positive impact was the British use of indirect rule on the colonies. Through harsh movements, this method still helped the Indigenous in many ways. It led to building roads and railways and strengthening of the economy with encouragement inproduction of cash crops(doc 7). One last negative impact of British Imperialism was the effect it had on the Chinese, and their resistance towards it. Boxers were a society of the Righteous Hormonious Fists who attempted to drive Westerners out of China from 1898 to 1901. In this process, thousands of Christians were murdered and several churches were destroyed. The Boxer Rebellion caused a great amount of corruption and ended in a loss and debt for the Chinese(doc12). Evidently, British rule helped and hurt the Indigenous people in several ways.

  6. I agree with Kim that imperialism was both beneficial and harmful the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. The positives include the introduction of hospitals (Doc 4) and transportation (Doc 3) systems and the overall modernization of these nations. But the negatives include poor treatment of the indigenous people (Doc 2), population decrease and the power the European countries had over the countries.
The Europeans went to Africa, India, and South-East Asia to get the natural resources that their countries didn’t possess. In doing so, they adopted the “White Man’s Burden,” which is the “civilizing” of “uncivilized” people. While they were there, the Europeans taught the natives English as well as hygiene (Doc 12), and also modernized their nations by developing transportation systems and hospitals. The hospitals were beneficial to the native citizens because they were now able to live longer lifespans with the new vaccinations and medication they were receiving. The transportation systems helped to connect the countries to the rest of the world and helped with trading and strengthening the economy for both the indigenous people and the Europeans. The indigenous citizens appreciated the modernization that occurred in their country (Doc 1), and they knew that their way of life was better than it was before, but they were not very appreciative of the sudden control they were under. They worked for the Europeans to build their transportation systems and brought them resources that their country had to offer. If they did not bring back enough resources, their hands were cut off and sometimes they were even shot and killed. The populations of tribes dropped significantly. As a result of this torture, the indigenous people formed armies and there were many rebellions in order to try to convert power back to them (Doc 8). However, the natives lost all of these rebellions due to the fact that they couldn’t handle the technology that the Europeans possessed such as rifles and cannons.
Through the modernization of Africa, India, and South-East Asia, it can be said that European imperialism was beneficial to the native people. But through the mistreatment of the natives it can be said that imperialism was harmful to these people. However in the end, imperialism was both a positive and a negative.

  7. Imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East.
There were many benefits from imperialism. One way it was beneficial to the people was that they built a hospital (Doc. 4). This helped the people in Africa because if they had any sicknesses or injuries that needed attention, they got it, and they weren’t just left to die. Another way imperialism was beneficial was that it created neutral trade. In document six, it describes how when Otto von Bismarck called for the Berlin Conference, this is when they decided on neutral trade. He declared the mouths of the Congo River and Niger River open for neutral trade. This eventually led to the unification of Germany. This was beneficial because it created a less diverse feeling because it aloud everyone to come and trade. Lastly, imperialism was beneficial because it created a new form of transportation. They created a train in the Nineteenth Century (Doc. 3). This was beneficial to the people of Africa because they could now travel easier than before.
While there were many benefits of imperialism, there were also many negative effects. One negative effect was the ‘arbitrary boundaries’. The ‘arbitrary boundaries’ wreaked Africa in many ways. It caused Africa to divide their cultures and it brought Africa’s enemies together (Doc. 6). This was bad because it caused diversity among Africa and most likely was to start more conflicts. Another way it was negative was the Maji Maji Revolt. German won this revolt which was very bad for the Africans (Doc.8). Before this revolt, Africans worked on farms and paid taxes to the Germans. But after, when the Germans won, Africans were no longer aloud to do agriculture. This resulted in a famine. The last negative effect is the poor labor. In document two, the Africans were being forced to work in mines for long hours. This was negative because the mines were very unhealthy and caused many injuries and damaged workers bodies.
All of these reasons show how imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India and South-east.

  8. I agree with (Ally), Imperialism was both beneficial and non-beneficial for the indigenous people of Africa. Many European nations were part of the imperialism of Africa. According to document 6, all of the European nations who wanted a piece of Africa met at the Berlin Conference where they divided up Africa. Some of the European nations include Brittan, France, Germany, and Portugal. The problem was Africa was not invited to this meeting and did not know this was happening. Some cultures were divided between the boundaries that the European nations made. This was non-beneficial for the Africans. Another negative effect can be seen in document two. The Europeans forced the indigenous people to work long hours in dirty jobs. They treated them as slaves. The Europeans wanted raw materials from Africa for their factories and made the Africans get it themselves. Imperialism was also beneficial for the Africans. The Europeans helped Africa to build railroads for better transportation, document three. This was a major advancement for Africa and it also helped to modernize and improve transportation. Another positive effect of Imperialism on the indigenous People of Africa was that hospitals were built. According to document four, The British built hospitals for the Africans health. Now Africans can get medical treatment if needed. They can also receive medicine if they are ill. This will improve the lives of the Indigenous people of Africans and help them to live longer. According to document one, The British held no oppression on their colonies. Oppression is the exercise of authority or power in a burdensome. This was beneficial to the indigenous people, because it was politically peaceful. Although Imperialism was negative for some of the indigenous people it was also positive for others. The European nations helped Africa to Modernize and improve their transportation. They also helped them by building hospitals. Imperialism also harmed the Africans by dividing up cultures and forcing them to work long hours.

  9. Imperialism was beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia, but also harmful. The African people were being forced to do things which were harmful to them, but in the end it was beneficial to them, and others. For example, in document 2 it shows the Africans being forced to work in a mine. This was harmful because they were being forced to do this against their will, and for long hours. This damaged their health and could possibly cost them their life, depending on the condition they were working in. This document also shows that they were treated similar to slaves. Although in document 3, it shows a train that was built in the Nineteenth Century British Colony. The train being built is an example of the benefits of imperialism. Even though the indigenous people of Africa were harmed while working in the mine, it ended up as a good result because railroads were built along with other advances, which modernized transportation. Another benefit was showed in document 4. Hospitals were being built, which helped these people because it saved lives and provided better sanitary conditions. Advances in the way these people were living changed the way they lived in a positive way. According to document one, the indigenous people of Africa said that it was “morally, a great blessing.” The British brought political stability and peace. On the other hand, it shows the British ruled without African consent, which was a negative effect on the Africans. They had no say in what was happening to their way of life. I agree with Kim Hickey because some negative effects were due to sudden domination and lack of control over their own territory. An example of sudden domination was the boxer rebellion. In the boxer rebellion, boxers attempted to drive westerners out of china but were defeated. During this rebellion, thousands of Christians were killed. Over all, imperialism was beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. There were many good reasons for imperialism; they were changing the Native’s lives and modernizing their way of living. But there were also negative benefits of this because they were not respecting their culture, and their way of living.

  10. Imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia during the nineteenth century.
Imperialism was beneficial because, it brought "politically peace and order" to the African people. The African people felt that imperialism was "morally a great blessing," they believe this because it gives them greater political peace and organizes the economy(doc.1). The British modernized transportation in the African colonies. They built the first rail road systems in Africa (doc.3). This made transportation and communication easier, allowing for greater cultural diffusion. The people of Africa also benefited from the hospitals built by the British in the colonies (doc.4). The hospitals decreased the amount of people dying, because they could now be treated in the hospitals. It also allowed for a greater life span, because less people died, due to a common cold.
Imperialism was also harmful to the indigenous people. One way it was harmful was that Africans were forced to work in mines. They had to work very long, hard hours without a choice (doc.2). The Africans were treated similar to slaves because they both were forced to do hard labor. Imperialism was also negative because of the Berlin Conference. The Berlin Conference was when Africa was divided up into colonies, by the European countries, without African consent (doc.6). The Europeans changing the borders, divided up cultures and brought together enemies.
I agree with Kimberly Hickey that imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people. It was beneficial, but has a series of negative impacts. It was beneficial because it provided political order, modernized transportation, and created the first hospitals. Imperialism was harmful because it caused forced labor, similar to slaves, and divided up African boundaries and cultures. Over all, the Africans were looked down upon, due to their race, but their way of living was also modernized and changed for the better and worse.

  11. Imperialism not only caused many problems for the indigenous people of Africa, India, and south-East Asia, but it also had a positive impact as well. In document one it is explained that imperialism had a positive impact on Africa because it brought political stability and peace. On the other hand imperialism also impoverished the native people. The British kept trying to give the natives things that they didn’t want or need because they just don’t understand there way of life. In document two, imperialism is portrayed as a negative impact on the natives because the Africans were being forced to work in a mine for extreme hours. These mines were not even close to their civilization, the natives had to walk for days just to get there and the way back was terrifying because if one came back and did not collect enough coal or whatever they were mining for, they killed them on the spot. Imperialism did impact the native societies positively when new technology was introduced. In document four, the British built a hospital for the natives. This allows the life span of the natives to increase because now their illnesses can be treated. The main reason the British built this hospital was so that they will live longer and be able to work for them for a longer amount of time and there will be more people working in a colony with a hospital than a colony without a hospital. According to document 6, Otto Von Bismarck called the Berlin Conference which was when Africa was divided among many countries. France, Germany, Great Britain and Portugal were all at the conference but one country was missing, Africa. This was not fair to Africa since they had no say and lost all of their land. This was also negative for the natives because the other countries did not care where they made their boundaries and some of these arbitrary boundaries divided tribes up. I completely agree with Kim Hickey, Imperialism had many negative effects on the native people in Africa but it was also beneficial to them as well.

  12. I believe that imperialism was not beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa and South-East Asia. In fact, imperialism was harmful to them. According to document 1, under Britain’s rule, the indigenous people of Africa felt that morally it was great but politically it was stupid and they made many mistakes. Also, materially, the indigenous people were impoverished. Impoverishment means to reduce to poverty. Another example of the unsafe conditions of imperialism was shown in document 2. Document 2 showed Africans being forced to work in a mine in South Africa for many, many hours. The division of Africa by France, Germany, Great Britain and Portugal was done in the Berlin Conference. This was not beneficial to the native people of Africa because they had no say in the matter. This created “interethnic strife and political fragmentation” (document 6.) The last example of destruction caused by Imperialism in Africa is when the Germans raised the African’s taxes during the Maji Maji Revolt. AS a result, the Germans confiscated the African’s crops and prevented them from growing more crops. The German’s actions lead to famine which made African tribes surrender one by one. The number of deaths totaled up to about one third of the population (document 8). In India, the native people were treated poorly as well. Also, they had no say in government (document 7). As for South-East Asia, the results of imperialism were also harmful. Like Africa, China was also carved up to be ruled by other countries. This was known as the spheres of influence. Also like Africa, South-East Asians had no say nor could own any of the land (document 11.) Amongst all the nations that were imperialized, there was racism. Europeans saw the indigenous people as uncivilized, dirty, and uneducated and they often treated the indigenous people like they were children. They often had no rights and were constantly told what to do. They were often known as “The White Man’s Burden” (document 12.) I agree with Mary Ferruzza because I too believe that imperialism “harmed them more than it did help them.” Also, I too agree with Jessica that the European powers took advantage of the Africans and other countries while imperializing.

  13. I agree with Sam Wahba that imperialism was beneficial to the natives of Africa. The British imperialists provided many positive things for the continent of Africa. Document 4 shows that African natives received medical care that was not available to them before. This hospital that is shown benefitted many Africans by aiding their illnesses and diseases. Not only in medical advancements, but technological advancements, Britain helped improve their colonies in Africa. Railroads were soon built in these colonies connecting mines and different regions. I also disagree with Sam because there were many negative things done to the continent of Africa by the Europeans. Some of these things include forced labor, mistreatment and racism. A British advertisement shown in document 8 shows a man holding soap. This is directed towards Africans. The British are using white man’s burden against the natives and saying they should “clean” themselves because they are dirty and “black” and do not live up to the white man’s standards. Document 2 shows a picture of a few native Africans being forced to work in mines. These mines may be looking for coal or diamonds. The Europeans did not care about the natives’ working conditions in contrary to the fact that they still had organized hospitals for current medical care. Africans would also be sent off in large groups in forests to look for rubber. When the groups were gone for weeks at a time they were sent with little to no supplies. Document 5 states that these rubber searchers would be beaten and even killed sometimes if they brought back small amounts of rubber or none. The managers of these privately owned companies in Africa were ruthless. They did not care about their workers lives and would punish them for the slightest mistakes. Imperialism had an overall neutral effect on Africa with some parts very developed today and others are the poorest countries in the world.

  14. Imperialism was beneficial to indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. It was beneficial because it advanced to advance and modernize their technology. For example in document 4 it shows a picture of a African hospital. The people of Africa benefitted from the hospital because disease wont be spread and people can recover and get healthy from any diseases they currently have. This leads to more lives being saved and population growth. Also, without the British the Africans probably have as much of this technology in order to build the hospitals. Stronger medicine was probably available if needed.
Another example would be in document 3. It shows a picture of a train being built of the people of Africa. Europeans are teaching the Africans hot to build new technology such as this. this type of skill could def be beneficial for the future for when they want to build this type of technology for the own country.
Document 8 shows a racist ad of British soap telling black men to buy their soap to be more like the white man. Back then it was better to be more like the white man so if black man buy it they could be like them. but in a way this is beneficial the Africans because some of them might have not had the materials to be sanitary. Buying this product more people will be clean and less sickness could be spread and Africa will feel more civilized.
Also, in document 2 it shows a picture of African people working on a gold mine. The Africans were working in dangerous and dirty conditions. Due to the Europeans, the Africans were forced to work in such conditions. Africans were forced to give any gold and gems found in the mines be given to the Europeans. They could buy the gems back and sell them to make money for themselves. Also, if the African people have this sill to find gems and gold they could use their skill and find it themselves and make even more money in the future.
Even though the Europeans did such horrible things to these people, they learned the hard way of very important skills and ways to enhance technology and themselves as people all together.

  15. I agree with Jenna, that imperialism was beneficial, but also not beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. According to document one, the british rule in Africa was a great blessing. The British rule gave Africa politically peace, and order in the country. There was no oppression in Africa by the British, but it was also bad because the British didn’t know what the Africans wanted. (Document 1). The Africans were forced to work in mines for long hours, which was not beneficial to the people of Africa. (Document 2). On the other hand, the British built a memorial hospital in one of the colonies of Africa. (Document 4). This was beneficial because if one of the Africans got hurt got injured doing a job for the British, there was a hospital for them to go to. The British ordered the people of Africa to collect rubber to use in the industrial factories. If the Africans didn’t come back with enough rubber, they would be killed. All the Africans who didn’t bring back enough rubber were lined up behind one another, and shot with one albini bullet. The British used this method so they wouldn’t waste bullets. (Document 5). This act showed the worser side of imperialism. The ad is document 9 is advertising soap. It is saying that if your skin is not white, then you are not cleanly. This ad is being racist towards the Africans because the British are trying to “brighten the dark corners of the earth”. (Document 9). Imperialism was a bad and good thing for the indigenous people of Africa, India and South-East Asia. Although imperialism caused these ethnic groups to do horrible things like work in mines for hours, it caused many good things out of it like building hospitals and giving political peace in colonies.

  16. Imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous natives of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries. One way in which imperialism was beneficial to the African natives was through the usage of the hospitals and advances in medicine provided by the British (doc 4). The hospitals will provide better medical attention to the people of Africa and provide cures to diseases such as Malaria which will eventually cause an increase in their population. Many people in Africa, India and South-East Asia had a positive view on British imperialism which can be proven through the words of Dadabhai Naoroji. He claims that the new British rule is “a great blessing” and also states “I have not the least doubt that you (the British) would do justice”(doc 1). This shows his positive view on the effects imperialism has been creating. A harmful effect of imperialism was that the people in Africa, India and South-East Asia were forced to work for extremely long hours in the coal mines for little or no pay while the British benefited from it(doc 2). The work done in coal mines is very dangerous which is a reason why the natives were forced to do it. The natives also had to gather rubber and if they came back and the British felt they did not bring enough back they were killed. The natives also had to build railroads for the British (doc 3). I agree with Emma Rubino in that British imperialism was both harmful and helpful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. Imperialism can be viewed in a positive light or a negative one depending on which aspects you look at.

  17. I agree with Nolan Riddle that imperialism was both harmful and beneficial to Africa, India and South East Asia. A positive impact on imperialism is shown In document 4, it states "Memorial Hospital built by the British in one of their colonies." When the Europeans came they provided the African's with many advancements in medicine and medical attention. The Europeans taught the Africans many life saving methods and provided them with vaccines and healthcare. Even though the Europeans helped the African's there was also a negative side to imperialism. Such as shown in document 5, the natives were forced to work for weeks in the forest in order to find enough rubber to fill a small basket. If they were not successful and did not come back with enough rubber they were shot and killed in cruel ways. For example the Europeans would line the workers up and kill them with one bullet. They did this because they did not want to waste bullets on them. As quoted in document 5 "A pity to waste cartridges on such wretches." They wanted to make examples of them so the survivors would come back with the proper amount of rubber. During the trips to supply the British with rubber it was described as "a horrible exhausting trip" to travel back and forth in fear of their own life. When the Europeans came they intended to take over the Africans because they believed they were more superior. as stated in document 6, "I repeat, that the superior race have a right over the lower race." This is the idea of Social Darwinsim which lead to a lot of controversy regarding who was more superior. The negatives of imperialism outweigh the positive impact on the natives. Document 2 stresses, the natives were also forced to work in mines in South Africa for many back breaking hours. They were also forced to build railroads for very little or no pay. The activities that the natives were forced to do were grueling and cruel. When people say that imperialism had only negative effects on the natives the British would always turn to the excuse of "The White Man's Burden" which is the idea of trying to make the African's cleaner and more civilized. In document 9 the ad is relating soap to helping Africans to be more like Europeans "in the ways of cleanliness." I agree to disagree with imperialism. Due to the fact that African's were treated horribly with no respect, however were provided with medical advancements. I fully agree with Nolan Riddle when he states "Imperialism was good for the countries doing it. But not for the countries they are invading and conquering."

  18. Imperialism, the policy of extending one country’s power and influence to others, had detrimental and beneficial effects on indigenous people of India, Africa, and South-East Asia. Dadabhai Naoroji stated, “British rule has been morally, a great blessing; political peace and order on one hand, blunders on the other, materially, impoverishment” (Doc 1). Britain established political unity in that India united under a single ruling, while poverty also resulted. Indians were forced to purchase British goods, thus fabricating new markets, and burdens of taxation aroused. The British system was known as knife of sugar. While there was seldom oppression, the Indians’ needs were ignored, thus making this all seem as a money-making scheme designed to betray the subjects it was intended to civilize. From industrialization, factory workers were exploited, enduring long hours in unsanitary, harsh conditions. The African working conditions paralleled those that were experienced during the Industrial Revolution. The South-Africans worked in mines for long hours, often leading to exhaustion, starvation, and injury (Doc 2). Mines posed many dangers to the workers, such as cave-ins, gas explosions, and chemical leakage. Imperialism had modernized Africa, India, and Asia, bringing new advancements in technology, transportation, healthcare, etc. The British constructed a memorial hospital in African colonies (Doc 4). With these hospitals, Africans received extensive medical care with many of their ailments being treated, thus decreasing death rates. Moreover, the British developed a cure for malaria, prompting drastic increases in the population as well as life span. The natives must have been educated in order to run these hospitals. The Europeans introduced railroads, which permitted efficient transportation and trade (Doc 3). In doing so, Europeans unified India in that Northern and Southern India were connected, in spite of geographic barriers and distance. Negatively though, indigenous people constructed these railroads, and thus, they were forced to work long hours in unbearable conditions. Europeans were seeking rubber in order to fuel factories in industrialized areas. Africans feared the Europeans due to their brutality. According to Scrivener, “A man bringing rather under the proper amount, the white man flies into a rage, and seizing a rifle from one of the guards, shoots him dead on the spot” (Doc 5), which conveys how unfairly and cruelly they were treated. Additionally, the Europeans had implemented the notion of “White Man’s Burden,” thus repressing the natives’ culture. White Man’s Burden was utilized to justify European imperialism in that it was the presumed responsibility of white colonizers to impose their civilization on the colonies. Often time, their innovations to African and Indian society were costly, and the British ignored their desires. Additionally, the whites degraded the natives to a status of inferiority. From the soap ad, racial undertones insinuated that the whites were clean, and the blacks were dirty in that “Pears’ Soap is a potent factor in brightening the dark corners of the earth as civilization advances while amongst the cultured of all nations it holds the highest place” (Doc 9). As most Europeans established direct control in colonies, indigenous people had no political voice in their government, resulting in many changes in society that were not called for. Although imperialism is beneficial and harmful, it exemplified more harmful tendencies on the indigenous people. I agree with Sydney Kandel when she states, “...overall I think that Imperialism was non beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa, India and South-East Asia,” using her reasons that Europeans used extreme brutality to accomplish their conquests, essentially stripping the natives of their culture. The Europeans acted in their own self-interest, exploiting their resources, perceiving them as animals, and using them as solely means of labor.

  19. Imperialism was both helpful and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India and Southeast Asia. It was helpful because the European countries showed the native people how to have proper hygiene. They gave the indigenous people medicine, vaccines and sanitation. The European countries built hospitals and railroads. They made improvements to the countries that they took over and those countries became more modern. Imperialism was harmful to the indigenous people because they no longer had control of their own land. They were treated like slaves and forced to work long hours in mines. If they didn’t cooperate, they were punished and sometimes killed. They didn't have a say in the way they were being governed. They didn't make any money from the natural resources that were taken from their land. They also didn't have any freedom. For those reasons, I think that imperialism was helpful and harmful to the people of Africa, India and Southeast Asia.

  20. I believe that imperialism was not beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa. Most of the African’s did not like the way the British ruled. They felt they were unfair rules and weren't being treated equal and fair. They were forced to do work that no one else had to do. In document 2 you can see that the Africans were being forced to do work that they weren’t getting paid a lot for. They were forced to work in the mines for long tiring hours. The African’s did not have a choice if they wanted to work or not, and if they refused there would be serious consequences and punishments that would happened to them. Document 5 also shows how imperialism was harmful to the indigenous people of Africa. “On removing from the station, his successor almost fainted on attempting to enter the station prison, in which were numbers of poor wrenches so reduced by starvation and the awful stench from weeks of accumulation of filth, that they were not able to stand.” after long days of working the mines of they did not bring back the amount of rubber that the British wanted they were killed or punished severely. The British did not care how they lived and what happened to them, they only wanted the rubber that they collected. The Africans were treated like animals by the British. In document 6 it also shows how imperialism was not beneficial. The French wanted to remove the Catholic influence from the most educational and promoting a vast extension of the French colonial empire. I repeat, that the superior races have a right because they have a duty.” he is saying that France is a superior empire and that we should all follow them because they are “superior.” Lastly in document 8 it has a negative effect on imperialism. The whites felt like they were burned to educate and care for the non whites. They felt like they were going out of their way to help people. That isn't a good way to think when you are forming an empire. In this document it is saying that the non whites should be grateful that they are getting something that the whites have. I agree with Kerin that imperialism was not beneficial to the Africans because all the bad that everyone else did to them out ways the little good that they did to the Africans.

    1. Imperialism was both beneficial and non beneficial to the Indigenous people. In document one imperialism was beneficial and non beneficial to the people. It was beneficial because it says it was a “blessing politically peace and order”. Meaning that it was a blessing being under british rule. It was also non beneficial. For example “... on the other hand, blunders on the other, materially, impoverishment..” This showed how the british rule did not help the indigenous people because they were in poverty.. In documents two and three, it shows how the british imperialism was harmful to the people. For example in Doc two there is a picture of a mine, showing the africans working very long hours. This was harmful because they were in the mines working long hours and taking in toxins which was harmful to their health. In Doc three it shows a picture of a train. The train system was beneficial because they are being exposed to new technology, but it was also non beneficial since they had to help build the tracks for many long hours. In Doc five it showed the reader how cruel the Dutch leaders were to the indigenous people. In document seven spheres influenced china. They influenced china in a positive way by making sure trade would flow more freely. The problems that America had with the spheres is that overall they obtained all of the power. In document eight there is a picture and an add, that both represent “white man's burden”. White man's burden means that some people believe they are superior over others. This wasn't beneficial to the people because if people who imperialize their country they will think they are better than everyone else. The soap add in Document eight was beneficial to the indigenous people because it told them if you are clean you can brighten the future. This helped the people by keeping themselves clean. Overall Imperialism was helpful and harmful to the indigenous people.

  21. Imperialism was both advantageous and disadvantageous to the domestic people of India, Africa, and South-East Asia during the 19th century.
Imperialism was advantageous because, it brought "politically peace and order" to the people of Africa. The Africans felt that imperialism was "morally a great blessing," they believe this because it gives them greater political peace and assemble the economy(doc.1). The British modernized transportation in the African colonies. The British built the first railroad systems in Africa (doc.3). This made conveyance and transmission easier, allowing for greater cultural diffusion. The Africans also advantageous from the hospitals that were built by the British in the colonies (doc.4).The hospitals helped reduce the amount of people dying, because the ill can now be treated in the hospitals. It also allowed for a greater life span, because it lowered the amount of people dying due to the common cold.
Imperialism was also disadvantageous to the native people.
One way it was disadvantageous to the African people was that they were forced to work in mines for long hours everyday. They had to work long, painful hours with no choice (doc.2).
The African people were treated the same as the slaves because they both were forced to do hard labor for long hours. Imperialism also had a negative effect because of the Berlin Conference, which was a meeting of Europeans powers discussing the dividing up of Africa into colonies without African say (doc.6). By the Europeans changing the borders of Africa, They divided up African cultures and brought together enemies.
I agree with Nicole Trisciuzzi that imperialism was both advantageous and disadvantageous to the domestic people. It was advantageous to the African people, but it also had multiple negative effects. It was advantageous because it created the first hospital, provided political order, and modernized transportation. Imperialism was also disadvantageous because it divided up Africa boundaries and cultures due to the Berlin Conference and caused forced labor, similar to slaves. Overall, the Africans were treated differently due to their skin color, but the Africans way of living was also modernized and change for better and for worse.

  22. Imperialism was a dual-sided ideal, but despite its few positive attributes, it had a negative effect on the indigenous populations of Africa, India, and China based on how it uprooted these vulnerable people's lives and cultures. One of the first steps Europeans took to start gaining more territory was the Berlin Conference. This conference was setup to prevent war between the major European powers over the highly coveted continent of Africa. All the major European nations were given a voice at the conference, and they successfully divided up Africa amongst themselves without giving any thought to the people already on the inhabited continent. This would set a precedent for the treatment of the Africans through imperialism: the indigenous people would be given no say as they were forced into the forfeiture of their land and identities as a people. Once the Europeans got to Africa, they established themselves as the new leaders and highest citizens of that land. Under the European's rule, groups like the Africans faced many new hardships that they had never experienced during their culturally uninterrupted time as a whole. The Africans were forced, under Dutch rule, to harvest rubber in the Congo. Now, it may at first sound appealing, as if it was a new, lucrative source of employment for the natives, but do not be mistaken. The Dutch metaphorically put these people in a chokehold, manipulating them and pressing their advantage so they could have the desired rubber for their industrialized machines. Document 5 highlighted the harsh realities of life with the Dutch, painting for the reader a picture of fear under the vice grip of cruel leaders. The Africans were forced to work long hours to collect rubber, and as the document so vividly described, if the natives fell short of their quota, they would be lined up and shot with a single bullet. This shows the lack of respect the Dutch held for the natives, as they placed greater value on the rubber and bullets than the life of a human being.under more Europeans control, the Africans also were forced into mines to collect diamonds for the Europeans. These mines, like the one shown in Document 2, were not only detrimental to the landscape and environment, but also to the natives forced to work long hours in them. China suffered many hardships at the hands of imperialism, starting with the spread of opium and branching outward. In order to gain greater influence with China, the British began to smuggle the highly addictive drug opium into China. When the British refused to control the steady flow of opium into the country, the Chinese declared war. However, despite their valiant efforts, the Chinese lost due to their lack of industrialized weapons and the British gained extraterritorial rights within the country. Britain's newly gained influence made other countries want to trade and expand into China. America happened to be one of these countries, and as shown in document 7, America proposed an "Open-Door Policy". This policy would make it so that all countries could have free trade with China and keep their spheres of influence, which were areas of trade dominated by one country. This may have been economically beneficial for the western countries, but it took a hard toll on China as new trade made the country more suscesptible to foreign influence, influences they had strongly disliked and tried to rebel against. Despite all the negatives, imperialism did hold one major positive for native groups: modernization. When the Europeans arrived in places like India, they brought new technology and setup things like trains and hospitals, like the ones pictured in Documents 3 and 4. These inventions, despite being a drastic change for indigenous groups, would go on to help them and hurdle them into the future. Overall, despite the positive modernization that came from imperialism, the natives of Africa, Southeast Asia, and India were impacted negatively by this great change.

  23. I agree with Lexi when she says that it the Imperialism of Africa was both harmful and beneficial to the people of Africa and India. Imperialism is the act of expanding one country’s power and influence through military force. This act of Imperialism was both harmful and beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa and Southeast Asia. As document 1 shows, the British rule over Africa has been a great blessing to the people of Africa. Some of these Africans believed that there was no real oppression, or problem in this takeover. “That is to say there is no oppression, it is smooth and sweet but it is the knife notwithstanding” (Document 1). Hospitals were built by the British for the Africans to go to provide better and cheaper healthcare. Unfortunately, as the British rule of Africa was considered beneficial to some, to most, this was considered harmful and very negative. In document 3 states, it is pictured that Africans are being forced to work in the mines for the British. They were working in the mines almost every day for nearly the entire day, without much rest. This shows that the British were desperate for materials and resources, so they put the Africans to work to help them expand their empire by finding them their much needed materials. The British were also desperate for rubber, the main resource in which will provide them with much material for making weapons and things to sell at their new markets. They made the Africans travel for days in search for mass amounts of rubber, with scared and frightened looks and expressions. “I saw a few men come in, and the frightened look even now on their faces tell only too eloquently of the awful time they have passed through. As I saw it brought in, each man had a little basket, containing say, four or five pounds of rubber” (Document 5). As the labor was fierce, the punishment was even fiercer. If an African failed to bring back the proper amount of rubber, they were then shot on the spot with a rifle. As we can see, the Imperialism of Africa through Britain was both beneficial and harmful In the African’s eyes, as it is only beneficial to the British, In that they knew that it would be the best thing to do to further expand their nation, but at the cost of thousands of lives in Africa.

  24. I agree with Laura Burns i think imperialism was not beneficial and beneficial to the people of Africa, India, and South-East Asian they were taken advantage of in (doc 5) by the International Association of the Congo. They forced the population to collect rubber and bring it to them if they didn't bring enough or none at all then they be shot with an Albini bullet which was the way they killed to show that the people meant nothing to them they would line the ones they wanted to kill up and shot one bullet down the the line not to waste ammo also some slaves tried to escape but if they were caught they were also shot with the bullet they killed so many africans they said you could walk for five days in one direction and not see a single person. In (doc 4) they british in some of their colonies did have hospitals for the Africans to heal them with medicine that without the british coming they may have never had access to. They had to work in mines for long hours (doc2) to bring the British rubber. In (doc6) China do not want to trade with the British because they thought the British didn't have anything they needed until they got the chinese hooked on opium which made the chinese work less and just want to do opium this lead to the opium wars and lead to the open door policy so now china has to lead merchants in to trade and have places for ships to refuel. In (doc 6) the British took over egypt because according to the author the egyptians were unable to rule themselves because they weren't as advanced as the British they didn't have a treasury or an army or government. For these imperialism had its benefits but was mostly bad for the Africans, Indian, and South-East Asian.

    1. “I agree with John Chiarello where he states how the British imperializing these European countries had both beneficial and non-beneficial impacts to them as a whole.” This is because despite the fact that there are a decent amount of negative affects to British imperilment, there are also quite a few positives to back up the other side of the turning point. The countries who which were impacted by these actions taken by Britain include the people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. Some of the positive impacts that the British brought to the natives of these European countries were medical facilities and improved technology. For example it shows in one photo how a large group of Indian natives benefited from these hospitals that the British provided for them (Doc 4). Also a large percentage of these people were even brought back to a healthy and stable living condition. But generally you will find that the British had a larger amount of negative affects to society in these European colonies. These impacts to the natives’ lifestyle varied from harsh living conditions to cruel treatment in the workplace. For instance in one of the images, it shows how these Africans were forced into working in the mines for long hours and under poor safety precautions (Doc 2). In addition to that, there was also an image taken from the Nineteenth Century showing how unstable some of these structures were and workers would occasionally be crushed to death as a result of the previous information (Doc 3). Another negative affect that occurred, having taking place in the 19th Century was the cruel and unjust treatment of the foreign natives controlled by a British company called the International Association (Doc 5). This was applied when the people of this association felt that these native workers weren’t bringing in enough rubber which to the British was necessary in order for them to make a profit. So they would make the Europeans work under long and hard conditions and if the wanted amount of rubber was not brought to them you would be killed on the spot. If the workers tried any way to run or escape the country, then you were brought to the station and lined up behind one another, and an Albini bullet would be sent through them killing every single one of them. Overall, there were both beneficial and non-beneficial impacts made to these European colonies through the British imperilment.

Imperialism was not beneficial to the people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. Many lost their rights to their culture, individuality, to practice their own religion, and were tortured during this period of time. The Africans were forced to work long hard hours in a South African mine. They mined for rubber because it was a very rare material and that’s what the British wanted. (doc 2) Even though they were paid, they weren’t paid a lot and if they failed to bring back enough rubber they were killed on the spot. They were killed in many brutal ways, one of them was when the British shot them in a line with one single bullet. Depending on where they stood was the definition of their faith so some never knew what was going to happen until it did. Usually the people on the end survived, the British did this to save bullets. (doc 5) Also the British believe that they had to spread their culture to places like Africa because they thought it was better than theirs. This was called “The White Man’s Burden” which basically meant that the whites had to “clean up” after the Africans. The economy during the time of imperialism showed that the white man was much richer than any other man. Also, during imperialism the white men claimed that they were much more superior. (doc 8) During imperialism the white men had no respect for anyone lesser than them. Unfortunately for the African, Indian, and South-East Asian men and women that’s what they were. The white men claimed it was a burden to share their blessed culture with them because they thought it was so superior. In addition when the Africans were working for the British they were tortured in horrible ways. African, India, and South-East Asia lived in this terrible period of time also know as the time of imperialism.

  26. Imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia during the 19th century.
Imperialism was beneficial because it brought "politically peace and order" to the Africans. They felt that the idea of imperialism was "morally a great blessing." They believed this because it gave them greater political peace and a better economy, according to document 1. The British modernized transportation in the African colonies. They built the first rail road systems in Africa (doc.3). This made transportation and communication easier, which allowed for the expansion of cultural diffusion. The people of Africa benefited from the hospitals built by the British in the colonies, according to document 4. I agree with Nicole Trisciuzzi that imperialism was beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people. It was beneficial, but it also had some negative impacts. It was beneficial because it gave political order, modernized and better transportation, and created the first ever hospitals. Imperialism was harmful because it caused forced labor, similar to the ways of slavery, and divided Africa as a whole and its culture. Overall, the Africans were seen as inferior to the Europeans, due to race, but their way of living was improved and changed for good and bad of the people.

    1. I agree with Theresa Delahanty that imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia during the 19th century. Imperialism is the act of expanding one country’s power and influence through military force. Imperialism was beneficial in many ways. One way is in document 1 it analyzed that the British rule over Africa was a great blessing to the people of Africa. Some of these Africans believed that there was no real oppression, or problem in this takeover. “That is to say there is no oppression, it is smooth and sweet but it is the knife notwithstanding” (Document 1). Document 1 also explains to us that it brought "politically peace and order" to the people of Africa. The Africans felt that imperialism was "morally a great blessing," they believe this because it gives them greater political peace and assemble the economy (doc.1). The British also brought new inventions and new ways of transporting goods to Africa. The British built the first railroad systems in Africa (doc.3). This helped out the Africans greatly by transporting goods in an easier and faster way. The Africans also advantageous from the hospitals that were built by the British in the colonies (doc.4).As you see British helped the Africans extremely, although imperialism was harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. The British forced the Africans to do work that no one else had to do. In document 2 it shows the Africans being forced to do work that they weren’t getting paid a lot for. They were forced to work in the mines for long tiring hours. The African’s did not have a choice if they wanted to work or not, and if they refused there would be serious consequences and punishments that would happened to them.

    2. I totally agree with Theresa, imperialism was both harmful and beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa. Imperialism was beneficial because they were saved by the hospitals that the British made which helped them live longer and healthier. It is also a good thing because they called it a "great blessing" and how they seemed to enjoy the British being around. On the other hand there is a downside to imperialism in Africa because they were forced to work for the British in the mines like Theresa had mentioned. In conclusion, Imperialism was beneficial and harmful towards the indigenous people of Africa.

  27. I agree with Meagan Troutman that imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. Imperialism was beneficial because as stated in document 1, British rule was a great blessing and politically created peace and order. Another positive impact on the Africans as stated in document 4, the British built the Memorial Hospital so the population was increasing because people were now being medically treated and no longer dying of disease. Imperialism was also harmful because as shown in document 1, it also created impoverishment, and although there is no oppression the native people are not receiving what they want. Another example is in documents 2 and 3, the Africans were being forced to work in mine in South Africa for long hours and train in a British colony to fight for the British. A majorly harmful aspect of imperialism in Africa was in document 5, the British sent the Africans on a missionary to bring back rubber in order to increase the price of the finished product being made with rubber. If the Africans failed to bring back enough rubber they were put in a line and shot in the head so the bullet would go through all of their heads. By the time the bullet got to the last person it would be traveling extremely slow and that person would die a very slow and painful death. They used this method because they believed that these people were not worth using one bullet on each person and it would be a waste of ammo. This method was also used to show the other workers what happens if the rules are not follow, and to scare them into doing what they are supposed to do. Due to the fact that Africans were treated horribly as if they were not even humans but gained many new advancements medically and politically, i believe that imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people, as stated by Meagan Troutman.

  28. Imperialism was not beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. For example in Document two it shows that the Africans were being forced to work in a mine in South Africa for long hours. These coalmines had very harsh conditions and no British worker would want to this type of work. For this reason they sacrificed the African lives to work this harsh job. Another reason why imperialism was not beneficial to the Africans was they would lose some of their needed resources such as rubber because the British were demanding for this raw material. For example in document 5, it shows how the British made the Africans collect as much rubber as they could. If they failed to bring back the amount of rubber they were supposed to bring they would be beaten to death on the spot in front of the other Africans to set an example so the other Africans make sure to bring back the amount of rubber they are ordered to bring back. Also if you tried to escape and you were found, you would also be killed in front of the other Africans to set another example. The British also tried to take rule over other countries that were too weak. For instance in document 6, the British took over Egypt. You may think yes this help because they got a better education, but it also hurt them because they were put to work and had no power over the British. Finally even though the British were happy that they had people to work for them, they also hated their guts. In Document 8, it shows all the racist comments the British had toward the Africans, Indians, and Asians. For example one of the comments said was “Pears’ Soap is a potent factor in brightening the dark corners of the earth as civilization advances while amongst the cultured of all nations it holds the highest place – it is the ideal toilet soap.” This quote shows that the British didn’t care for the Africans they wanted to lighten those corners of the earth up cause they were so dark. I also agree with Kerin Grisanti because the African were being taken advantage of and they were losing their land and their natural resources and that is why imperialism was not beneficial to the Africans, Indians, and Asians.

  29. Imperialism had both negative and positive effects on the indigenous people of Africa, India and South-East Asia. some of the negative effects included, the natives being forced by the Europeans to work in mines and build structures to benefit foreigners. Many Africans were forced to work in mines across the continent(doc 2). They were mining for materials such as rubber that could be used in factories(doc 5). Many of the foreign military leaders were very strict and aggressive towards the natives. If anyone tried to escape or did not bring enough rubber back they were killed. Many of the times people would lined up and shot since the foreigners did not believe that each person was worth a whole bullet. Along with being forced to work in mines the natives were also forced to build things such as railroads(doc 3). Although these could’ve benefited the natives of Africa, Asia, and India, most of the time they were unable to use them due to the Europeans having complete control over them. Even though imperialism had negatively affected the indigenous people of these regions there were some positive effects. Many foreign countries built hospitals and they also introduced modern medicine to the people that lived in these parts of the world(doc 4). By introducing these things along with new technology it increased the lifespan of many and in some cases the quality of living. I also agree with Jessica because the writing states how there were both positives and negatives to imperializing these regions. The positives being building hospitals which help with sanitation. Some of the negatives that were that the Africans were forced to work and build things such as railroads for the British. In conclusion although there were some positive effects of imperialism in places such as Africa there were many negative reasons that countered all of the positive reasons.

  30. In my opinion, Imperialism was very beneficial to the natives of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. In Document 1, Dadabhai Naoroji explains how British Imperialism was a negative on India. On the other hand the indigenous people of Africa liked British rule because British imperialism caused no oppression. Oppression is the exercise of authority or power in a burdensome, cruel, or unjust manner. In Document 4, the people of Africa actually benefited from having health services like: hospitals, and after that health clinics. Because of Imperialism, hospitals could prevent diseases through vaccines, and medicines would help if someone did get sick. I disagree with Laurie Davis because Imperialism actually had was positive than negative, in Document 1 Africa saw imperialism as a positive because of the things it gave the people like health buildings, education, and jobs. In Document 6 Jules Ferry explains how France removed Catholic influence because of imperialism which was a positive because it builds character for the people. France’s economy wasn’t so good so they went imperialistic and it actually caused them to do better and better. Last but not least in Document 8, White Man’s Burden is like an obligation to take care of someone else’s needs, this actually teaches to help others. Helping others to better the economy for their society. Also in Document 8 is states “Teaching the virtues of cleanliness.” Imperialism actually taught people to keep everything clean and safe. The documents I chose help show how imperialism helped people in Africa, India, and South-East Asia. Document 8 also shows how White Man’s Burden explained the idea of helping which was new at the time during the period of Imperialism. In today’s world actually Africa, South-East Asia, and India are very organized and strong because of the cultural ideas they gathered from Imperialism. Also from Imperialism those places gained hospitals which helped with causing less deaths and preventing diseases to spread to more people.

  31. I agree with Shelby Meyer,Imperialism was beneficial for the Europeans yet harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia for many different reasons. One reason for it being beneficial would be that even though the Africans were being harmed it turned out to be beneficial for them. An example of this would be in document 2 and 3 where it shows pictures of the Africans being forced to work in a mine in South Africa for long hours each day. This shows that it may not have been beneficial for the Africans but it ended up being beneficial for other people because they were able to build a railroad for people to travel and trade with. Another example of this would be in document 4 where it shows a picture of a hospital that was built by the British in one of their colonies, this helped many people get the help they needed to get better from the diseases and sicknesses being spread during this time. Also during this period of time Africans had jobs which included bringing back rubber which was used for manufacturing. If they failed to bring the rubber back in time they would shoot them dead on the spot. This was another thing that wasn’t beneficial for the Africans, but it was beneficial for the people that needed the rubber. This is because they could replace the jobs of the Africans they shot very quickly since there were many other Africans looking for jobs and money. Also as a result the Europeans would get the rubber that they needed from the Africans faster. In conclusion, imperialism was beneficial for Europeans and harmful for Africans most of the time. But because of this many of the lives of people changed due to modernization and upgrading their way of life and new technology, even though many African lives were put in danger for it.

  33. I agree with Diana, that imperialism was beneficial and also not beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. In document 3 it shows a positive effect on the people because trains were built in the British colony so it’s easier and faster to transport goods. Another positive effect of imperialism on the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South -East Asia was shown in document 4 the British had built a Memorial Hospital in one of the African colonies. This was really beneficial for the Africans because the hospital would help with less people dying from disease. In document 1 the british rule was a great blessing in Africa because it gave order and political peace in the country. All these documents showed the beneficial part of imperialism on the indigenous people but there were many non beneficial effects of imperialism. A document that shows a negative side is document 2 because it shows that Africans are being forced to work in a mine for long hours. Also in document 9 it shows an ad that is about soap. In this ad they are being very racist by saying “ Pears’ soap is a potent factor in brightening the dark corners of the earth.” This is basically saying that if you are of a different race and not white than you are not cleanly. Document 5 is also a negative effect because the Africans would have to go out and collect rubber and bring it back to the British and if the Africans didn’t bring back enough rubber they were told to stand in a line and then they were shot. They used this method because it was a way of saving money because they would only have to use one bullet. As you can see imperialism had a beneficial side and non beneficial side to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South -East Asia.

  35. I agree with jessica donato because there were many reasons why imperialism was beneficial and not beneficial to african people. One beneficial reason from document number four is that the British built a memorial hospital in one of their african colonies. The africans benefit from this because now they can live more sanitary and clean lives. Another benefit can be seen in documents numbers two and three. The British built many roads and railroads for the africans. The new roads and railroads allow for more transportation of people and goods. Harmful reasons can also be seen from documents numbers two and three. Even though the africans can benefit from what they are being given, but they are being forced to work in the mines of South Africa for long hours. More harmful examples can be found in document number five. The british used a technique known as mercantilism. Mercantilism is when a country's colonies provide raw materials to trade with or use to make goods. This was the case for the British and africans with rubber. The africans were forced to collect rubber for the British. The scene of the africans bringing back the rubber was described as poor trembling wretches after weeks in the forest would come back with not enough rubber and upset the British. If the slaves tried to escape from the area they were lined up in a row and shot. This specific method was used to the slaves they care so little about them that they don't see any reason to waste ammo on them. Another harmful issue was the Berlin Conference . The Berlin Conference was harmful for the africans because all the European countries were talking about how the territories in Africa will be divided without the African countries opinion.

According to documents 1, 2, 3, and 5 Imperialism was not beneficial to the native peoples of Africa and the congos, due to harsh conditions and unjust treatment many natives opposed colonies. The british had treated the natives just as well as slaves and paid them less than the dirt they were sleeping on. As of some of the things the natives were getting in returns were Medicines, roads, modern technology, (white man’s burden) many didn’t like it.
Many did not care for the white man’s burden. Such as Dadabhai Naoroji.
(Document 1) “our great misfortune is that you do not know our wants” -Dadabhai Naoroji. He is a native of africa who spoke for the people in 1871. He wonders when the british would “know our real wishes”. In which i agree completely with, because i wouldn't want someone giving me something i don't want, that’s like my dad getting me a doll for christmas.
Another problem was the work, gathering rubber, being forced to work at a mine, building railroads (etc). (doc 5) Natives would be sent out to collect rubber from the trees and if they did not come back with enough or in time they would be shot “dead on the spot.”, “everything was on a military basis…. The only reason for it all was rubber”. And if you were a native would you be happy about some white man army coming in and forcing you to get rubber? No… Documents 2 and 3 show us the conditions of the mines and the structure of the Railroads, which you would have been forced to make, if not killed.
All in all, the establishment of colonies was a complete negative happening towards the natives. They were forced to do hard labor and if refused killed. Everything was a militaristic basis. Also many did not want the benefits of the White man’s burden. They wanted the white man to give them what they wanted, not what the white man was just throwing out there.

  38. Imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. However, most of the results of imperialism were harmful to the native populations. The countries that ruled over these people, such as Britain, America, France, and Germany, gave them the benefits of culture, technology, religion, and others. Unfortunately for the natives, imperialism also led to slavery, forced labor, punishment, and overall cruel treatment of the people and their land. In document 5, the Christian Missionary describes what the work was like for the native people of Africa. The workers had to collect rubber from the rubber trees in the forest, and bring it to the store for the British soldiers to inspect. If they did not bring enough rubber, the native would have been immediately shot dead as punishment. In document 6, the French politician Jules Ferry describes his views on imperialism and its benefits, such as more places to put naval bases and more trading opportunities. However, these are only beneficial to the mother country, and not to the native people, who are being forced to do the country’s labor for little pay. In document 2, the picture shows African servants being forced to work in a coal mine. This is unfair for the people, because they do labor for long hours and for very little pay. Lastly, in document 3, the picture shows a railroad being built for the British colonies. Although this is a beneficial act for the British, it is harmful to the indigenous people and their land, for the railroad cuts through forest and other natural landscapes, which most likely are used by the people for resources and food. As much as imperialism led to harmful results, it was also beneficial to the native people. This is why I agree with Jessica, because the mother countries gave the people helpful things like a medical center. Without the medical center, many of the natives would die from disease, illness, or wounds. JOSEPH SALVEMINI

  39. I agree with Nicole Trisciuzzi when she says that Imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and Southeast Asia during the 19th century. These people lost their culture and many rights but gained political peace.
In Document 1, the idea of imperialism helped the economy for the Africans. According the document 4, hospitals built by the British greatly benefited the Africans. Africans were now treated in these hospitals due to better medication and new technology. Schools were built and children could finally attend, and more jobs opened up for the people of Africa. The British also built the first railroad system in Africa which made transportation faster and communication easier. (doc 3)
Not everything that the British did was helpful though. Africans were forced to work long hours in mines trying to find rubber. These people were paid very little for the work that they did. They were searching for rubber and if they did not collect enough they were killed by the British. Rubber was a rare material but there were no excuses for the Africans. The Africans were lined up and shot down the row of people. This was done to save bullets. This shows that the British thought that they were less valuable than a single bullet. The British treated them like slaves and thought they were superior to them because of their race and their country. The Phrase to explain the is the White Man's Burden. This means that the British thinks that they need to spread their “blessed” culture and way of life to other countries because they think that they are better than these other countries.
During the time of imperialism there was a positive and negative outcome for the people of Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. Although i believe that imperialism was more harmful to these countries, there were still some benefits such as schools, hospitals, and new job opportunities. But the negatives such as being treated like slaves, little pay, the White Man's Burden, and death are more extreme than the positives. Savannah Coffelt

  40. Imperialism is a policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force. European countries went in and developed things in these areas economically by importing and exporting and building ports. They built roads, railroads, and ways to communicate with each other. They imported goods like teak wood, rubber, spices, coffee and sugar from the plantations they took over or created. These parts of Imperialisms were positive for the people. They felt that they had the “White Man’s Burden” which meant they had the moral responsibility to civilize “primitive people” and bring Christianity to the “heathen masses”. Although how they got there was very harmful to the people who lived in these countries. They felt is was a blessing on one hand and blunders on the other hand. They called it “Sakarki churi” meaning the knife of sugar. The negative aspects of Imperialism are that native people worked as laborers on plantations or businesses owned by colonial elites. Wages were kept low so the profits were higher and conditions were poor and led to many deaths. They made them work in bad conditions. You could get killed if you did not produce enough rubber, or farm enough sugar, coffee or other kinds of goods. Colonial powers did not want the people to develop their own industries, only continue to supply the raw materials that keep the industries in the mother country and buy those products. Also people were overworked in the fields without relief and died. Many were unhappy about being ruled by Western powers. Most revolts or uprisings happened because people who lived there were pushed off their land. Eventually a middle class developed that pushed for native rights and independence. Imperialism had both a positive and negative effects on the people of those areas. The mother country brought positive things like hospitals, medicine, technology and advanced farming ways. At first it brought a lot of things that the people didn’t have before. But then the conditions became very bad for the natives. They were forced off their land, forced to work long hours, were paid low wages and sometimes died due to horrible conditions and military possession.

I believe that imperialism was helpful and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa and South-East Asia. European powers started to create colonial empires in the 16th century, but businesses really took off in the 19th century, especially in Asia and Africa. During the 1800s, European powers carved out spheres of influence in China, India, and pretty much all of Africa. Industrialization was the motive for European imperialism. European were killed by disease which made it difficult for them to take over territories in Africa until the late 19 centuries. Such diseases included yellow fever, sleeping sickness etc. This made it difficult for them to get inland. So as much as they may have wanted to colonize Africa in the 16, 17 and 18 centuries things like Africa's mosquitos, people etc. Technology made everything easier for them and helped them bring things inland. The most important technology that made it possible for Europeans to dominate Africa was guns. Imperialism was both negative and positive. European imperialism involved a lot of fighting and dying which was considered negative. And when we say that Europeans came to dominate, that included a lot of wars which resulted in a lot of killing of Africans an Europeans. By the end of the 19th century, most of Africa and much of Asia were colonized by European powers. Most of European colonizers resorted on indirect rule. European imperialism resulted in access to European education which was positive. There was an enormous technological advantage. According to document number 4, Imperialism helped the construction of building hospitals. This helped people in Africa get better and get any medical attention that they needed due to the fact that Africa there was a large amount of diseases as mentioned earlier. Imperialism also was said to be a "morally, a great blessing" according to document one as stated by the indigoes people. The British brought political stability and peace according to document 1. Imperialism was also harmful to there indigenous people of African and South-East Asia. One way it was harmful was the forcing to work in mines. According to document 2, they had to work very long, and hard hour in the mines without any say or choice. The africans can easily be compared to the way slaves were treated in that the way they were treated was very similar. In conclusion, imperialism was both beneficial and also harmful to the people of India, South-East Asia and Africa. Harmful in the way that they had no freedom, but helpful in the way that these con tries become more modern.
I agree with Kaitlyn with the idea that imperialism can be seen as both harmful and beneficial to the indigeneous poeple of Africa, India and South-East Asia.

  43. I agree with Laurie Davis that imperialism was not beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa and South-East Asia. Imperialism was harmful to the indigenous people people of Africa and South-East Asia because it didn't bring the justice the people deserved and were impoverished by british ruling, according to document one. The indigenous people of Africa were being treated horribly with unfair work in coal mines as stated in document two. They were forced to work in the terrible conditions of the coal mines and breathed in coal fumes all day. In these working conditions the Africans could and did contract diseases that were very harmful, especially to the children. Document five states that African people were being killed because they did not bring back the right amount of supplies for the Europeans. In document five Scrivener says, “ The former white man would stand at the door of the store to receive the rubber from the poor trembling wretches, who after, in some cases, weeks of privation in the forests, had ventured in with what they had been able to collect” (Doc. five). This shows how scared the Africans were for there lives because of imperialism. Imperialism cost the indigenous people their lives. On the other hand, in document four, there are hospitals built by the british for the indigenous people. This took care of the indigenous people when they were sick. This hospital would have been used less if it wasn't for the horrible treatment of the coal mines. In document three, there was a train built in the british colony. This train helped the indigenous people transport goods for trades easier and freed up more time to do other work. Overall, imperialism had a very negative effect on the indigenous people of Africa and South-East Asia and I fully agree with Laurie Davis.

  45. Imperialism had both negative and positive effects on the indigenous people of Africa, India and South-East Asia. It was positive because in Document 1, British rule was a great blessing and it politically created peace and order. Another reason it was positive was that they had built a Memorial Hospital so that people would then be treated medically and no longer be dying off illness, as stated in Document 4. It was also positive because they built the first rail road systems in Africa because of Imperialism, according to Document 3. This made it easier to transport around. In documents 2 and 3 it also shows the negative side. The South Africans were forced to work for long hours and forced to fight for the British. These were dangerous conditions and putting their lives at risk. Document 5 talks about how they were forced to gather rubber for the British. If they failed to bring back any rubber, they would be killed on the spot. The reason they did this was so that the other Africans would always bring rubber back because they feared getting killed. I agree with Nicole Trisciuzzi, that Imperialism has both negative and positive effects on the indigenous people of Africa, India and South-East Asia during the nineteenth century. Even though Imperialism was beneficial for these people, at the same time it was negative which makes it hard to determine what the outcome really was. There were many negative reasons that caused all of the positive reasons.-Anthony Rizzi

  46. Imperialism was helpful and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa and South-east Asia. Some of the negative effects imperialism had on these countries included, the Europeans forced natives to work in mines and build structures to benefit foreigners. Many Africans were forced to do labor in mines across the continent (doc 2). The Africans were mining for materials such as rubber which were used in factories (doc 5). A lot of the military leaders were very harsh on the Africans, for example, if anyone tried to run away or failed to bring back enough rubber they were killed. Many of the times if multiple people disobeyed there leaders they would be lined up and killed using only 1 bullet because the military leaders thought the Africans weren’t worth a whole bullet. Even though they were forced to work in mines sometimes they would be forced to build railroads (doc 3). Even though the building of these railroads could’ve benefitted the Africans, they were usually not able to sue them due to the fact that the Europeans had full control over them. There wasn’t all negative effects the Europeans brought, they also had some positive effects. Many foreign countries introduced modern medicine and built hospitals for people that lived in these parts of the world. When the foreign countries introduced these new technology’s it increased the lifespan and in some sorts benefited positively towards there quality of living. I agree with ally because although they brought advancements in some aspects of life like medicine and transportation they also made some Africans lives terrible and brutal through hard long labor.

  47. I agree with Tyler Olsen. That Imperialism was both harmful and beneficial to Africa, India and Southeast Asia. It was good for the countries conquering other countries but not good for the countries being conquered. A positive effect is shown in the pictures from documents two and three. There was a railroad that was built, which is very good for transportation and trade. However, this is also negative because in order to build these railroads, the natives or the spaces had to work long hours in terrible conditions in order to create the railroad. The British did help and improve things like "Memorial Hospital built by the British in one of their colonies." This helped many advancements in medicine and medical attention. The British healed the injured and cured the sick, and it led to Africa having more healthy people to have a bigger population and people to control society. But just because the Europeans helped doesn't mean there wasn't a negative part to imperialism. For instance, the natives were forced to work for weeks in the forest in order to find enough rubber to fill a small basket. If they were not successful and did not come back with enough rubber they were shot and killed in cruel ways. This was shown in document five, and that the Europeans would line the workers up and kill them with one bullet. They did this because they did not want to waste bullets on them. "A pity to waste cartridges on such wretches." Also in document 6 the Europeans came they intended to take over the Africans because they believed they were more superior, "I repeat, that the superior race have a right over the lower race." This is the idea of Social Darwinsim which shows that the countries conquering the other countries were not always good. Imperialism has its positive and negative effects but there are more negative reasons that countered the positive reasons. And that is why I agree with Tyler.

  48. I agree with Kerins response because imperialism had a negative effect on the populations of Africa, India, and China. One of the steps Europeans took to start gaining more territory was the Berlin Conference. The Berlin Conference prevented war between the European powers. Document 5 shows the life with the Dutch, showing the reader what they were really all about. The Africans were forced to work long hours and as the document shows , if the natives didn't do what they were supposed to do , they would be lined up and shot with a single bullet. That shows the lack of respect the Dutch had for the natives, as they showed greater value on the rubber and bullets than the life of a human being. Under more Europeans control, the Africans also were forced into mines. These mines, like the one shown in Document 2, were very poor conditions of work in , but also to the natives forced to work long hours in them. China went through many hardships at the hands of imperialism,. In order to gain greater influence with China, the British began to smuggle the addictive drug opium into China. The Chinese declared war and eventually lost due to multiple reasons. Britain's newly gained influence made other countries want to trade and expand into China. America happened to be one of these countries, and as shown in document 7, America proposed an "Open-Door Policy". This policy would make it so that all countries could have free trade with China. This has been beneficial for the western countries, but it was very bad on China as new trade made the country more open to foreign influence. Even with all the negatives, imperialism did have one major positive for native groups which was modernization. When the Europeans arrived in places like India, they brought new technology and setup things like trains and hospitals, like the ones pictured in Documents 3 and 4. These inventions, despite being a major change for groups, would go on to help them in the future. Even with the positive modernization that came from imperialism, the natives of Africa, Southeast Asia, and India were impacted negatively.

  49. Imperialism. What is it? When did it take place? Why did it happen? All of these questions could be answered back from the late 1800’s to 1914 when the British took on the “White Man’s Burden” and tried to take control of African land. Imperialism to the people of Africa, India, and Southeast Asia was very beneficial to the people of these places at this given time. Now the only way to understand what all of this is about is only if you really know the true definition of imperialism. Imperialism is the domination of one country or a group of people by another group of people. In document 1, the indigenous people of Africa called the British rule a “Great Blessing.” They were happy that the British could bring political peace and order to their continent. The British also improved impoverishment for the Africans. In document 4, it shows a picture of a hospital built by the British in one of the African colonies. This type of service benefitted the Africans because they could live a healthier and longer life due to the medicine and doctors that the British provided. They provided these medicines and doctors to help them cure any of the diseases that the Africans might have had. In document 7, it shows a primary source that shows what the spheres of influence were in China. It told you that anything that is merchandise or shipped to all ports are collected and become property of the Chinese government. The Americans asked for no interference with any treaty port or “sphere of influence” or leased territory. The Chinese Treaty Tariff should apply to all merchandise landed or shipped to all such ports no matter what nationality it may belong. Lastly, it will levy no higher harbor dues on vessels of another nationality frequenting any port in the “sphere” that shall be levied on vessels of its own nationality. In document 8, it shows an ad for Pears’ Soap, is really referring to the “White Man’s Burden.” Soap in general cleans and washes away dirt, etc. The Soap in the ad represents the “White Man’s Burden” and how it's “washing away” their culture and beliefs in return for learning theirs. Imperialism is good in this document because the British are giving them things in return for their work. Imperialism is beneficial to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia by taking away some of their rights, but giving them supplies that they needed in return.

I agree with Jared Canale that imperialism was not beneficial to the indigenous people of africa and south east asia. the indigenous people of africa work mistreated and over-worked in mines as seen in document 2. they were exposed to coal fumes all day. many of them contracted diseases and died. africans collecting rubber were sometimes in weeks of privation. they had to bring a large amount of rubber. as said in doc 5 they were shot if they dont bring in the needed amount of rubber.if they tried to escape they were brought back and they stood back to back and they were shot. The british said “a pity to waste cartridges on such wretches”(doc 5). Although the british made hospitals for the african people,(doc 4), it doesnt justify for there other actions against the african natives. This train helped the indigenous people transport goods for trades easier and freed up more time to do other work. In the end imperialism had a very negative impact on the indigenous people of Africa.

  51. I agree with Kaitlyn Yurick, I believe that imperialism is not beneficial to the people of Africa, India, and south-east Asia. The people of those cultures were robbed of their individuality and the ability to express their cultures. They were forced into the mines to work for long drawn out hours(doc.2) As well they helped build bridges and trains for the British and other European countries to use(Doc. 3). As well the British had taken them and threatened them many times. In document 5, it talks about how the Africans were forced into doing work, they had to gather rubber. During this time period rubber was in high demand due to the new invention of the automobile, it was needed for tires. The Africans had to bring back a certain amount of the rubber otherwise they were shot dead right then and there. It scared the Africans because they were never sure they would get enough rubber. As well the British believed it to be necessary that they spread their culture because they believed it was better than everyone else. This is called the White Man’s Burden. In document 8, it says how we need to bring light to the white man’s burden. A direct quote to support this is, “Pears’ soap is a potent factor in brightening the dark corners of the earth as civilization advances while amongst the cultured of all nations it holds the highest place—it’s the ideal toilet soap”(doc.8). The quote is saying how we need to get rid of or erase the “dark things” on the earth. Which in fact they are talking about the blacks and how they should not be, and they’re just an inconvenience to everyone. As well the British overtook Egypt, their reasoning for doing this was the fact that the Egyptians simply did not possess the qualities desired to run a country according to the British (doc 7). Plus with the British taking Egypt it gave them extra land to use for resources, military bases, factories, and many other things. In conclusion, that imperialism is not beneficial to the people of Africa, India, and south-east Asia but beneficial to the other Europeans using them.

  54. I believe that imperialism was harmful to the people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. In documents two and three the Europeans where very harsh towards the Africans forcing them to do hard and dangerous work. They had the Africans working in mines for very long hours and they had them working on and repairing their railroads. These documents show the negatives of imperialism of them invading their hand and forcing them to do hard work for them and giving them no choice forcing them to do it. In document five the Africans had to get rubber for the Europeans and they had very high demands for them. The native population was forced to do the work and it was very hard labor. The Europeans wanted the rubber to trade or to make goods. The workers were scared everyday they worked because of their requirements. They were required to get a certain amount of rubber every day, and if they didn’t meet there requirements they were lined up in a row and show. The Europeans saw so little value in the Africans they didn’t want to waste ammo by shooting them individually so they were lined up in a straight line and shot with one bullet. The idea of “White Man’s Burden” was strongly believed by the Europeans. They believed they were better than everyone else because they were Europeans. Document eight shows the people opinion and the idea of “White Man’s Burden”. It shows soap as white and says how clean it is. They say you don’t want to be dark because then you aren’t clean. They were talking about themselves as high and clean individuals and saw the Africans as dirty. Imperialism was not a good thing because the Africans didn’t ask for it and they didn’t want to be used. The Europeans came in to their home, used them, harmed them, and killed them. Dean Schor

  55. I agree with Jimmy Burns that Imperialism was both helpful and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India and Southeast Asia. The African people were not treated properly under the control of the British. For example the African slaves that had tried to escape were lined up in a row and died a slow and painful death. “Men who had tried to run from the country and had been caught, were brought to the station and made to stand one behind the other, and an Albini bullet sent through them” (Document 5) This shows that the british people treated the Africans poorly. On the other hand some considered the british imperialism to be beneficial. In document one Dadabhai Naoroji says “British rule has been --- morally, a great blessing; politically peace and order on one hand, blunders on the other, materially, impoverishment” This shows that the british rule is politically peaceful and free of oppression. Document four shows another example of the benefits of British imperialism. The picture shows an Indian hospital built by the British. This hospital saved many African lives and helped the African Community. However in document 2, The african people are being forced to work in coal mines for long hours. Studies show that working in mines for long hours can lead to respiratory diseases and cancer. This shows that the British did not care about the African citizens. Lastly, Document three shows British people being forced to work on a bridge. The british people are puting the innocent African civilian lives at risk. Many people fell while constructing the bridge due to unsafe conditions. In conclusion, Imperialism was both helpful and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India and Southeast Asia. In my opinion Imperialism was more harmful to the people of Africa, India and Southeast Asia then it was beneficial. The Gruesome treatment of these people far outweighed the benifits of British Impearialisnm.

  56. British imperialism had both positive and negative effects on the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. One of the positive effects of British imperialism is seen in document 4. According to document 4, the British built hospitals for the people of Africa in their new African colonies. This is beneficial to the people of Africa because, before the British came, there were few, if any hospitals in Africa, which meant that people that were suffering from illness would likely die. Once the British built these hospitals, sickly people could go into the hospitals and be treated. Another positive effect that British imperialism had on the people of Africa was that the British built roads, canals, railroads, and bridges for these people. (Doc. 3) Not only could this help with transportation, but it will make trade far faster and more cheaper, as well. One more way that British imperialism beneficially impacted the people of India was by eliminating the ritual of Sati. What this ritual is, is that after a Hindu woman's husband dies, she would throw herself onto her husband's funeral pyre to gain honor. This could be argued as a negative impact because Sati was sacred to Hinduism and several people were upset about that. However, I think this is a positive effect because the British put an end to countless women killing themselves when they don't have to. These were some Positive effects of British imperialism.
While there are many positive effects of British imperialism, there are negative impacts as well. One of these effects was shown in document 2. Document 2 shows Africans being forced to work in coal mines for long hours. As demonstrated by the industrial revolution, people working in coal mines for long hours is not good. Africans got sickness, injuries, and were underpaid. They would be severely punished if they did not work well. Document 5 shows yet another negative impact of British imperialism, again, this involves labor. The British wanted rubber for building things, so Africans were given the job to get the rubber. Again, they worked long hours and the punishments were even worse. If a worker failed to bring back enough rubber, they would be murdered on the spot. And if people were caught trying to escape, they would be brought back, lined up, and shot with one bullet. The Opium Wars were another negative impact of British imperialism. The British were trading lots of the drug, Opium with China in exchange for goods that they needed. The Chinese government wanted the trade to stop because many Chinese people were becoming addicts and the Government did not want to deal with that. The British disagreed and the Opium wars followed, causing countless lives lost. These were some negative impacts caused by British imperialism.
In Conclusion, I think that British imperialism was more positive than negative because the positive impacts had more long-term, helpful impacts than the negative impacts, as they did not last as long as the positive impacts. Whether or not imperialism was positive or negative, all the nations involved would never be the same again.

  58. I think that the Imperialism was both harmful and beneficial to Africa, India, and even the Southeast Asia in history. The reason why I think it was harmful to Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, because in document 2 and 3 they built a railroad for the railroads. Here is the reason why it was harmful (negative effect). They forced the Africans to work in the mine in South Africa for long hours with no breaks at all whatsoever. They had to works their butts off to make the railroad so that their boss won’t get mad at them. Here is a beneficial (positive effect) why the railroad was helpful. The railroad was good transportation and trade for the villagers. They can go to a different city or country while taking the train. They can ship something on the train and the other person from a different city or different country can get it easily. The villagers can go on the train to a different country or city and trade with the other villagers. In document 5 the European countries were competing to get at all of the great riches of Africa's natural resources. In the year of 1882, Belgian Leopold II found a company called "The International Association of the Congo". The harmful (negative effect) of this is that if they try to escape from the area and were captured they would be beaten and forced to do exceptionally hard work that their boss gave them. They were also brought into the station and made to stand one behind the other and an Albino bullet was sent through them. A beneficial (Positive effect) of this is that their goal was to exploit the rubber and the mineral lands along the Congo River. In document 6 part 2 the harmful (negative effect) reason for it is that the Egyptians were unable to rule themselves, because the army was in a state of mutiny. The treasury was bankrupt, every branch of the administration had been dislocated; the ancient and arbitrary method, under which the country had for centuries been governed, had received a severe blow, while at the same time no more orderly and law-abiding form of government had been inaugurated to take its place. This shows us that in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia that they both had harmful and beneficial effects to them and the other

  59. Imperialism was both beneficial and harmful to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. The Europeans brought some positive aspects and some negative demeanor to these countries. These positive aspects include bringing medicine and building hospitals in Africa (Doc4), this allowed to African people to get the healthcare they need and this would allow for the population to increase. In addition, the Europeans created negative demeanor that was not fair to the native people of those countries. The British wanted rubber when they took over parts of Africa, and they use the natives to retrieve it for them. The British were harsh and cruel to the Africans. For example if they did not bring enough resource back, they would be killed(Doc 2 & 3). The same action happened if the natives tried to escape, they would be shot, making an example to the rest of the workers(Doc5). They called this the ‘White Man’s Burden’, which meant the people coming to controlling the countries, would force their culture and customs on the natives of that region. There is an ad showing a man washing his hands with soap and has a caption stating “The White Man’s Burden is through teaching the virtues of cleanliness. Pears’ Soap is a potent factor in the brightening the dark corners of the earth”(Doc8). This ad represents the Europeans coming to these countries and changing everything but, not in the most positive way. To conclude, The Europeans made positive and negative aspects to the indigenous people of Africa, India, and South-East Asia. I agree with Dylan Dichter, imperialism was beneficial and harmful to the natives of these countries.
